Architect Salim Daaboul – Vice Chairman of the Board of Trustees of the University of Kalamoon- said: “ one couldn’t continue
in tourism, trade, industry, and all other fields and even in development without having trustworthy universities which can provide qualified, trained, and competent human personnel to build up homeland because education is the cornerstone of development”. The speech came in a lecture on ‘Private University Education in Syria’ delivered by Daabool on 24/1/2010 at Assafir Hotel in Homs.
Mr. Daabool emphasized on the role of private university education and its importance in building the homeland. That role includes distinguished qualitative education, boosting the level of high education and scientific research, increasing university education opportunities, meeting the current and future needs alongside with other national and social roles. He concentrated on the concept of ‘nationalism’ in investment because it is the melting-pot of original investment. Investment in university education is original and noble goal bringing in benefit for itself and for the homeland. On the other hand, the parasite investment is bringing in benefit for itself from the homeland. He added that the availability of private university education in Syria has stabilized the youth in their country and enabled them not to go abroad to study. It is estimated that nearly 54% of our youth would annually go abroad to study. Mr. Daabool presented the University of Kalamoon as a brilliant example of private university education following the factors of making the efficient education a success. This can be achieved through the University of Kalamoon’s vision and message which are embodied in the national cause, great ambition, confronting obstacles, clear and noble goal and the collective work spirit. That vision is also pursued through the infrastructure the University provides. The total area of the campus and the expansion area is 985000 ²m, the teaching building area is 65500 ²m, the labs area is 12000 ²m, the closed gymnasium area is 2000 ²m, the playgrounds area is 17500 ²m, the restaurant area is 3000 ²m, the mosque area is 1750 ²m, the water recycling plant area is 660 ²m, the open auditorium area is 3500 ²m, the natural reserve area is 11000 ²m, the green areas are 75500 ²m, the roads area is 85000 ²m, and the pavement area is 56000 ²m. In the dormitories there are 15 blocs inhabited by 2700 students. The university has also a 500-person-auditorium, several size-diversed and multi-purposed halls, and a contemporary library holding 1500 students. In addition, the parallel economic and service infrastructure includes a mall and a hotel with an area of 47185 ²m, a special studio for TV production for media purposes, advertisement department, and a stationary shop equipped with printers to serve the engineering projects. Mr. Daabool also talked about the activity of the University of Kalamoon in the various cultural and social fields such as receiving notable Arab and International personalities like Dr. Azmi Bishara, Dr. Tariq Swidan, Mr. Khalid Mash’al, Prof. Yeger from Dresden University, Dr. Omar Abdul Kafi, Dr. Faisal Miqdad, Zbegeni Brejenski, the mayor of Rome, and many others. The University has also taken part in Arab and international exhibitions, musical concerts, and hosting sport tournaments like the Arab Championship of Fencing in 2009. Moreover, the University has established 18 students clubs in drama, cinema, culture, environment, etc. Concerning scientific communication and expertise exchange Mr. Daabool pointed out that the University had entered into agreements with 27 academic institutions and Arab and international universities like Glamorgan in Britain, Rostock in Germany, Oklahoma in America, Amsterdam in the Netherlands, and Paris 8 & 11 in France. Addressing the ambitions of the University Mr. Daabool added “the ambitions are providing the job market with accurate specializations that cover the market need as well as to some specializations that may open new opportunities for the job market, job vacancies in the University and construction works. Another ambition is to contribute effectively to the scientific research for the interest of both the University and the homeland. Mr. Daabool concluded by referring to the indicators of success of the University of Kalamoon. These include the increase in the number of the staff from 177 to 705 and the number of students from 443 to 5000, the reflections by top personalities, scientific communication with the best-ranking universities, and the success of the graduates in the job market and in high studies. On his account, engineer Abdul Majeed Abbas- head of the JCI declared that the JCI aims at discussing issues related to the business sector and updating the pioneering junior businessmen with the latest developments. This is done in the light of the JCI’s commitment to achieve its vision in creating a positive change in society. He added that the activities of the JCI cover four main sectors: business, society, individuals development, and the international sector. Mr. Abbas then offered the shield of the JCI to Mr. Salim Daabool- Vice Chairman of the Board of Trustees Attending in the lecture were the Deputy of Homs Governor, heads of chambers of industry and trade, the teaching staff at Al-Ba’th University, and interested attendance and the media. The lecture came in the framework of the lectures series organized monthly by the JCI in Homs under the patronage of the University of Kalamoon with the purpose of making public awareness in the business world.
