The Founding of the University
It was not an improvised decision to establish Al Kalamoon University but a result of people’s efforts for decades. The people of AI-Kalamoon region in general and Deir Attiah’s community in particular, have always been known for their dedication to their land and their relentless hard work to develop it. This devotion has considerably excelled over the past two decades.. Based on the founder’s belief in the direct positive effects of this project on the residents, one of the most important taken decisions was establishing UOK. Such project was so vital for both: the higher education system which was witnessing an accelerated development, and the prominent role of the university in the process of developing and modernizing new Syria.
The founders started corresponding with many prestigious foreign universities. A delegation visited Glamorghan University and some other British universities in Britain on December 2001 where they met their counterparts and discussed cooperation in academic affairs. This visit marked the launch of the existing relationship between the University of Kalamoon and the University of Glamorghan in the outskirts of Cardiff in the Wales Province.
In May 2002, an academic team from the University of Glamorgan met the Board of Trustees in Damascus of Al-Kalamoon University. Both parties discussed the future academic cooperation and had a tour in the expected site. That visit culminated in signing of the first cooperative agreement aligned with cooperative plan.
In August 18th 2002, Al-Nibras Joint Stock company submitted a License application to the Ministry of Higher Education to establish Al Kalamoun University.
In May 11th 2003, the Council of Higher Education issued a primary approval for the establishment of the Private University of Kalamoon (UOK). Soon after, the work accelerated for inaugurating the University at the beginning of the academic year 2003-2004.
In July 24th 2003, a final academic cooperation agreement was signed between the two Universities. At the beginning of August, an Academic delegation from Glanorgan University visited Damascus to finalize the academic plan for the first year students.
On August 18th 2003, a presidential decree no. 293 was issued, announcing the establishment of the Private University of Kalamoon (UOK) including first stage faculties with the possibility of establishing new ones with new specializations depending on Board of Trustees’ recommendation and Minister’s decision Council of the Ministry of Higher Education’s approval.
